Dear Friends,
Thank you for your generous support of Companion Star and its programs this year. We have been hard at work, and momentum continues to build. As you read this we are holding the second creative development workshop for our new radio opera, Under Milk Wood. A group of artists from dream seminar are working furiously to complete the entire libretto and score for this new opera. Because of your support, and a couple of wonderful designers, Companion Star was able to re-launch its website this year.
Our plans for the coming year are no less ambitious, and we need your help to continue chugging up the hill. In 2011 we will need to fund the organization and design of the world and North American premieres of dreamseminar/ drömseminarium, our flagship collaborative opera project (scheduled for Sweden, May 2012 and New York, January 2013, respectively). Twenty-three artists from seven different countries continue to contribute to this groundbreaking project. Please help us keep it moving forward!
The current Under Milk Wood workshop runs through December 4 in Wales. Companion Star, partnering with the Taliesin Arts Centre in Wales and Le Chien qui Chante in Québec, is coproducing this new opera by composer John Metcalf using text from Dylan Thomas’ famous radio play of the same name. We are working toward a 2014 premiere, timed to coincide with the anniversary of Dylan Tomas’ birth.
In addition to our programming goals, in the coming year we want to continue building our organization’s infrastructure, hire an office staff and an assistant to the Executive Artistic Director.
While funding for the arts continues to plummet, you have remained committed to them and we applaud you. By supporting Companion Star you further cast your vote in favor of dynamic, collaborative performance, international cultural exchange and education--we thank you!
Please help us keep our Laboratory for the Creative Process thriving in 2011 with your contribution. You can donate online at http://www.companionstar.org/dream/dreamplay/dreamdonate.html
Our best wishes for a wonderful holiday season,
Michael Douglas Jones,
Executive Artistic Director
